Quantifying the Benefits of Consolidating Older HP-UX Environments
Posted on November 30, 2010
TechWise Research published two new papers this month for companies that run HP-UX on HP 9000 or older HP Integrity servers. Earlier this year HP introduced a new update to HP-UX 11i v3 and three new Integrity server blades based on the Intel Itanium 9300 processor. This paper focuses on consolidating multiple HP 9000 or older HP Integrity servers into fewer HP BL8xoc i2 blades running HP-UX 11i v3. The paper is entitled Quantifying the Benefits of Consolidating Older HP-UX Environments. It provides detailed quantitative analyses of costs and benefits associated with four specific consolidation scenarios. For the first time the TCU analysis also includes discounted cash flow analysis (Net Present Value and Internal Rate of Return). TechWise used a combination of system pricing and operational data to quantify the costs and benefits of four specific upgrade scenarios. All four scenarios have a payback period of 1.2 years or less and an internal rate of return of 74% or higher. (November 2010). To see the first page of this report, Page 1. TechWise Research published two new papers this month for companies that run HP-UX on HP 9000 or older HP Integrity servers. Earlier this year HP introduced a new update to HP-UX 11i v3 and three new Integrity server blades based on the Intel Itanium 9300 processor. This first paper focuses on upgrading single servers to one of these new HP blades running HP-UX 11i v3. The paper is entitled Quantifying the Total Cost of Upgrading older HP-UX 11i Environments to HP's New BL8x0c i2 Server Blades. It provides detailed quantitative analyses of costs and benefits associated with the upgrade. For the first time the TCU analysis also includes discounted cash flow analysis (Net Present Value and Internal Rate of Return). TechWise used a combination of system pricing and operational data to quantify the costs and benefits of four specific upgrade scenarios. All four scenarios have a payback period of 1.1 years or less and an internal rate of return of 78% or higher. (November 2010). To see the first page of this report, Page 1. Quantifying the Total Cost of Upgrading OpenVMS Environments to OpenVMS 8.4 running on HP Integrity i2 Server Blades
Posted on September 12, 2010
TechWise Research just published a report entitled: Total Cost of Upgrading HP OpenVMS Environments to HP Integrity i2 Server Blades. This paper provides detailed quantitative analyses of costs and benefits associated with upgrading out-of-warranty HP AlphaServer and HP Integrity servers running OpenVMS to OpenVMS V8.4 on new Integrity i2 server blades. Previous TechWise papers documented the reliability and low total cost of ownership of OpenVMS environments. In 2010 HP introduced a new version of OpenVMS and three new Integrity server blades based on the Intel Itanium 9300 processor. TechWise used a combination of system pricing and operational data to quantify the costs and benefits from upgrading to OpenVMS 8.4 and these new server blades. The paper includes detailed cash flow analyses for three upgrade and two consolidation scenarios. The payback period for all five scenarios is one year or less. (September 2010). New Paper Helps Companies Avoid Server Downtime
Posted on April 05, 2010
TechWise Research's latest report is entitled: VAX and Alpha in 2010: Real Challenges, Solid Solutions. This paper provides a detailed description and benefit analysis of hidden vulnerabilities and new proactive maintenance options for HP VAX and Alpha systems. For a variety of business and technical reasons, over 200,000 of these heritage servers are still in production around the world. Many of these systems are used for business critical applications where the cost per hour of downtime is measured in tens of thousands of dollars. TechWise describes small investments companies can take to substantially reduce the risk of downtime and extend the useful life of these systems. For most companies, these investments are "no brainers" when compared to the risk of doing nothing (March 2010). To see the first page of this report, Page 1. New Study Investigates Server Upgrades in PLM Market
Posted on December 16, 2009
TechWise Research recently published a report entitled: Total Cost of Upgrade Study for the Product Lifecycle Management Application Market: Sun SPARC Servers to HP ProLiant Servers. Many companies that run PLM applications do so on multiple Sun SPARC systems. This report includes detailed analyses of the costs and benefits associated with upgrading these Sun SPARC environments to HP ProLiant servers. The three scenarios analyzed all paid for themselves in less than one year (November 2009). To see the first page of this report, Page 1.
