Quantifying the Benefits of Consolidating Older HP-UX Environments to HP Integrity i4 Servers
Posted on December 04, 2012
HP® announced five new servers based on the Intel® Itanium® Processor 9500 series (formerly known as "Poulson"). These new i4 servers offer faster performance, reduced energy use, expanded memory support, and improved RAS (Reliability, Availability, and Serviceability). TechWise Research published an updated white paper entitled Quantifying the Benefits of Consolidating Older HP-UX Environments to HP Integrity i4 Servers that quantifies the benefits of consolidating older HP-UX environments using these new i4 servers. Three consolidation scenarios using Integrity i4 blades were analyzed: an 8:2 consolidation of HP 9000 rp4440-8 application servers, a 4:2 consolidation of clustered rx8640 database servers, and a 10:2 consolidation of BL870c web servers. The final scenario involved consolidating four Superdome 2-32s systems with Itanium 9350 i2 processors into two new Superdome 2-32s systems with Itanium 9560 i4 processors. The analyses are based on current pricing for new Integrity i4 servers with support as well as Support Plus contracts for out of warranty servers. The analyses also use customer-reported data about the operational characteristics of the servers.
The three Integrity i4 blade scenarios all have a payback period of less than a year while the Superdome scenario has a payback of 1.8 years. (December 2012).

Posted on August 11, 2012
TechWise Research® published an update to a 2010 report entitled "Total Cost of Upgrading HP OpenVMS Environments to HP Integrity i2 Server Blades." Since publishing the 2010 report, HP has enhanced OpenVMS V8.4 and introduced the Integrity rx2800 i2 server. This new report updates the 2010 paper with current information. It provides a detailed Total Cost of Upgrade™ or TCU™ analysis for upgrading OpenVMS AlphaServers to Integrity i2 servers running OpenVMS V8.4. It quantifies the costs and benefits from the upgrade and provides detailed cash flow analyses for two upgrade and two consolidation scenarios. There continues to be very compelling reasons to upgrade or consolidate. In all four scenarios the payback period is less than one year. (August 2012).
